Chronicles of a coding bootcamp

Yesterday was my last day as a student of Lambda School.

After my graduation ceremony, I was programming a simple react application to store my writings and poetry that I currently keep in my journals. My partner came up to me and asked why I was programming on my graduation day. In that moment, I realized that expressing myself through this medium is truly what I fell in love with. Never in history has there been a more powerful, widely available way to express oneself that passes all spatial and time constraints that normally limited human communication. The hardware of a computer, the logic circuits that comprise its power, all the way up to the software languages where programmers build wonderful architectural feats of code. These great monoliths of code that keep global financial records, create virtual worlds, or simply help writers store their work digitally for billions to potentially read. Which of course relies on the internet, which allows information to be passed from human brain to human brain in milliseconds. One day all of this human information will power artificial intelligence as well.

Anyways summing up my time at Lambda School. I am eternally grateful for the structure they gave my technical life. Every day for the past 10 months for 8–10 hours a day, I wrote, thought about, drew, or talked about programs and programming concepts. Knowing myself, that would not have happened if I didn’t enroll in Lambda. To me, the most beautiful part of Lambda is the community of self-directed learners I encountered. On any given day, I would be in zoom meetings with people from Paris, Shanghai, London, California, Texas, New Jersey all wanting to further our understanding of programming concepts. It was wonderful.

Still, if I can get back to why I was programming my website on Lambda graduation day. It’s because to me, Lambda was a vehicle to do what I love. It’s not that I love Lambda, I love programming, Lambda gave me the structure and connections to do it at a high level. I will sing their praises the rest of my life for that.

But I have no plans to stop doing what I love just because school is out (Alice Cooper).
